Paint.net It offers many of the powerful features found in commercial editors, including the ability to work on multiple layers, full transparent PNG support, unlimited history, and a plethora of visual effects. An interesting feature is the way each tool window becomes transparent when covering the image. This enables better implementation of effects and is something the big image editors are currently lacking. New v3 features include a multi-document, tab-based interface, so you can open and edit more than one image. An improved and more powerful toolbar and user-definable colour palette are some of the other highlights. |

PIX Resizer
When capturing images it is always wise to use the highest possible quality settings for both resolution and compression. The problem with this is that the resulting images are normally too big to send by email. Pixresizer is a simple yet powerful utility for preparing images, either individually or in batches. The interface is well designed, with all four steps visible at once. There are several preset sizes or you can specify one yourself. Pixresizer will keep the correct proportions of the image to avoid odd results. The file format of the image can be kept, or changed into BMP, GIF, JPG, PNG or TIFF. Any accompanying EXIF data can be left with the file or discarded. Images can even be rotated or printed directly from Pixresizer. Pixresizer can also work with entire folders of images. Simply select the original folder and a new folder for the smaller images. Subfolders can be included if required. |

Serious Samurize 1.64.3 Samurize is one such, and the big advantage to using text is that the demands on the computer are much lighter. After all, there is no point using software to check on processor usage if it uses a significant amount itself. Samurize can display a wide variety of information about the computer, including memory and hard disk usage and how hard the processor is working. It can also monitor POP and IMAP email addresses and alert when new messages arrive. Samurize is more basic than many of the more modern desktop tools but it has the big advantage of very low system requirements. |

Compact Menu 2 for Firefox replaces the entire menu bar with a single icon. This looks a lot like the new Office button in Office 2007. As the options in the menus are not used that often, it makes sense to get back the space they use. Like most Firefox extensions, it is a small download and the installation process is well behaved and changes nothing it shouldn't. To enable the new menu button, right-click on the toolbar and select Customize. Drag-and-drop the Compact Menu into the toolbar with the forward and back icons and then click on Done. The menu bar should be hidden automatically. Click on the Compact Menus button to see the full menus. |

JMemorize One advantage of using electronic flash cards is that it is easier to track progress and scores as all of this is done automatically. Jmemorize does not come with any flash card sets ready to use. In fairness the range of topics it could be used with is so broad. There are some samples that can be downloaded from the Lessons page on the Jmemorize Wiki. Jmemorize has it's own file format but it can import .csv files As a Java program, this software will work on Windows, Mac and Linux. Simply double-click on the .jar file to start the program. This also makes it suitable for carrying around on a USB key. |

Defraggler Why does this happen? Simply as the more applications you install and remove from your computer, the more likely your drive will become fragmented. This occurs when files are stored in different locations on your drive and your drive has to spin more than usual to load Windows and your applications. Defragment your drive and the contents will be stored in one continuous block, so you’ll find your system starts more quickly and your PC appears to be running more smoothly. The Windows defragmentation tool isn’t the best available. It’s rather slow, so if you have a huge hard drive it can take hours to finish defragmenting your drive. Worse, you can’t really do anything whilst it’s performing the defragmentation process. Defraggler is a new tool from the developers who brought you CCleaner. It’s small and compact and will enable you to defragment a collection of files, as well as your entire drive. |
